While I found everything about the 5.1 track on part one to be impossible to top I discovered (thanks to The Digital Bits) that part two involved the 5.1 EX system.įolks, just buy this collection and crank the volume up. Within four minutes of the sequel, you're hooked on a thrill ride that not only blew away most animated films but also had moments of adventure that rivaled Hollywood's best stuff. Then came part two, and somewhere between the films came many new techniques that further blurred the line between real life and binary code. The backgrounds are amazing, the achievement is astounding, and everything about the production otherwise is top dog. Something about the shinyness of CGI always irritated me, and while the look worked fine with toys, the "real" people looked a bit weird. "Whew! I had a nightmare I was on BOSUM BUDDIES." It's a visual showcase, and even with all of the eye candy issues of friendship, growing up, and loyalty are integrated into a very convincing story. On top of that, you get a lot more from this cartoon than you normally would. There's static, and while the film could have been an exercise in these two leads vying for attention it instead tells a heartwarming and fun story. How can you compete with all those buttons and sounds? In fact, not only are toys alive but they're also quite intelligent. Or so say the guys and gals at PIXAR, the prolific computer animation studio behind the TOY STORY films. Toys are not just playthings you toss around, fight over, and ultimately burn in your first amateur filmmaking endeavors. Tangible proof Lucasfilm has a sense of humor. Not settling for just plain ol' boring DVD, they have put together the ULTIMATE TOY BOX. To the surprise of many, the sequel was a theatrical release, defying the usual Disney technique.Īnother surprise was that the second film was BETTER than the first. The result was a mega-smash that made gazillions of money and led to the inevitable sequel. It told a story, and did it very well using techniques that they wrote the book on. The first TOY STORY film set a precedent for computer animation onscreen. If there's a DVD folks wanted to see reviewed more than this one, I don't know of it.
